Russian Universities Make the Top 10 in Popularity Among African Elites

Russia has ranked among the top-10 most popular destinations for education among university graduates who now hold key positions in the governments and parliaments of African states. A total of 22 government officials received their education at Russian institutions, primarily from Angola, Namibia, Mali, Mozambique, and the Republic of the Congo, according to the expert-analytical reference book "Africa 2025. Opportunities and Risks" by the HSE University Center for African Studies.

Approximately 45% of African heads of state were educated in former metropoles, with only 13% receiving their education in their home countries; the rest studied in countries such as Russia, China, and the USA, which had no colonies. France, which owned almost a third of the African continent`s territory in the mid-20th century, predictably took the lead. According to analysts` estimates, 114 out of 719 African ministers, heads of state, judges, and parliamentary speakers were graduates of French educational institutions. Another former colonial empire, the United Kingdom, educated 94 individuals. Meanwhile, 78 African statesmen studied in the USA, and 41 in Portugal. Read this article in Russian here.

"In terms of cost and quality, Russian universities remain competitive in the educational services market in Africa says Sergey Balmasov, a senior expert at the Institute of the Middle East.  Africans are primarily interested in Russian educational institutions that teach Medicine, STEM, Engineering, especially in the Energy and Construction sectors".
