Kirov State Medical Univeristy (KSMA) is the youngest higher medical establishment in the Russian Federation that was created to consolidate all Kirov regions programs in medical education. Founded in 1987 by an act of Russian Ministry of Health Protection as an medical school affiliation of Perm State Medical Academy, KSMA was granted the status of an independent state-supported higher medical school in 1993, in recognition of its growth and development as a regional health system.

KSMA`s objectives are:

• to provide educational programs that enable medical students to master all branches of medicine and health care skills;

• to prepare medical students to demonstrate competence in their fields of study at appropriate degree levels and to encourage excellence in student learning;

• to develop programs oriented to the most urgent needs of the region`s health care;

• to provide graduate and continuing educational programs for both professional advancement and personal enrichment;

• to encourage and provide essential support services for creative activities and research;

• to provide a variety of public services to enhance the well-being of the medical school and its community;

• to provide leadership and planning for future development.

KSMA is an active participant of national research programs held under the supervision of Russian Ministry of Health Care and Russian academy of Medical Sciences . At present Academy takes part in such national projects as Public health and Education thus confirming its role in the reform of the system of health protection, globalization of higher medical education and practical realization of the Bologna declaration.

KSMA has already gained experience in international cooperation in joint research programs with such foreign countries as Germany, Great Britain and the USA. Another important sphere that is being developed is academic mobility. By now more than 400 students and researchers of KSMA have visited Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain, China, Canada, the USA and some other countries on various academic purposes.

Academy has been an active participant of international conferences. By itself KSMA has organized more than 100 international conferences and workshops on actual problems of family medicine, urology, andrology, gynecology, minimally invasive surgery, hematology, therapy, neurology, cardiac surgery, hepatology, hepatic surgery, ophthalmology, ophthalmic surgery and dentistry. New methods of surgery are constantly being mastered. Basic laboratories take active part in international clinic tests.

KSMA has good scientific relationships with Kirov Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Kirov Research Institute of Microbiology, Perm Medical Academy, Nizhny Novgorod Medical Academy, medical academies and medical research institutions of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

For nearly 25 years Academy has been training foreign students from various Asian, South American and African countries such as Azerbaijan, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, Syria, Sudan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Congo, Georgia and others.

One of the departments of KSMA is Institute of postgraduate education that enables graduates and practitioners to improve their knowledge by the following kinds of post-graduate and additional education: research postgraduate course, clinical residency, internship, professional specialist retraining.

An important area of Academy`s life is health recreation, sports and other facultative studies. KSMA can be proud of European, national and regional champions in judo, swimming, skiing, track, basketball and chess.

KSMA students are active and good at amateur concerts, amateur drama performances and Kirov intercollege «Funny Tricks and Witty Humor» contests. Now at Academy there are 2 dance clubs, a theatre and a chorus. Students take active part in popular «Students` Spring» festivals held among Kirov higher educational establishments and are always prize winners of these competitions. Among the students there are also many activists of the Regional Charity Foundation.

Kirov

Kirov, former Vyatka, is a city in north-eastern European Russia, and an administrative center of Volga Federal District. It is one of the prominent industrial, cultural and educational centers of Russia with well functioning telecommunicational and bank spheres. The population of Kirov is nearly half a million.

The climate in Kirov region is moderately continental, the winter is long and cold, and summer is short, but rather warm. The mean temperature in January is from minus 14 o C to minus 16 o C, and in July from plus 17 o C to plus 19 o C. Kirov is a part of Moscow time zone.

The city was founded in 1374 on the banks of the river Vyatka. Throughout its history the city had several names: first it was called Chlynov, then Vyatka and in 1934 the city was named after S.M. Kirov, a famous statesman of the past.

Kirov has a vast educational net, an important part of which is formed by institutes of higher education. The biggest higher educational establishments are Vyatka State University, Vyatka State University of Humanities, Vyatka State Agricultural Academy and Kirov State Medical Academy. Besides, there are nearly 91 secondary schools, technical schools, colleges, schools of sports, music and art.

The city is considered to be an industrial centre as there is a great number of modern industrial enterprises in it such as: Tyre plant, Nonferrous metal processing plant, Artificial leather plant, Biochemical plant, ski-factory and so on. Various measuring instruments, tyres, hunting, skiing, timber and Dymkovo toys are well-known in our country and abroad.

Dymkovo toys are the most well-known folk arts in Kirov. Dymkovo is a suburb of Kirov and a birth place of bright colour sculptures. Dymkovo toys date back to the 15 th century. The village of Dymkovo was founded by people from Veliki Ustyug. They were the first to model beautiful clay figures. According to the Calendar of the Vyatka province of 1856, 59 families of the village of Dymkovo made Dymkovo toys. Making Dymkovo toys was practised by the ordinary people, and the style of work was greatly influenced by the popular tradition the ordinary peoples ideals of beauty and harmony.

There are also several cinemas and three theatres in Kirov : the Drama theatre, the theatre in Spasskaya Street and the Puppet theatre. Besides, there is a circus. The Vasnetsovs museum of fine arts has a rich collection of masterpieces of old and modern Russian painters. Among them are pictures of Shishkin, Vasnetsov, Ivanov, Repin, Yaroshenko, Aivasovsky, Petrov-Vodkin and many other famous painters. The library named after Hertzen was founded in 1877. Now it possesses one of the best collections of books in Russia.

Like every town Kirov has a charm of its own. The nature of Kirov region is rich and beautiful. The city is surrounded by thick woods stretching for many kilometers. One of the sights of Kirov is a beautiful memorial to those Kirovites who perished during the Great Patriotic War. It is in Grins embankment. In front of the monument there is an eternal flame. Besides nearby there is a beautiful rotunda, a favourite place of young Kirovites. From that place you can enjoy the view of the Vyatka river with a bridge across it and a vast green park on the other side of the river. We call it Zarechny Park.

If you walk from here along Moskovskaya Street, you will find yourself in Theatre Square. Theatre Square, which is a nice place for rest and walk, is situated in the very centre of the city. In the middle of the square there is a small garden with a fountain. In front of the garden there is a fine building of the Drama Theatre. Here in the square we can also see Vyatka State University, the Arts Museum and the building of our regional administration.

Foreign students studying under contract live in a comfortable hostel for foreign students. Unauthorized persons are not admitted to the hostel. Rooms are furnished with bed, tables, chairs, lamps, wardrobes and bookshelves. 

Safety

When the student arrives to airport he/she will be met and transferred to university. At university students have orientation and welcome brief. After orientation the student will be placed at university hostel.

During all time of studying at university foreign students are supported by qualified team of International Department. All their needs will be satisfied with pleasure. There is very helpful consultancy for students who have educational difficulties. University has own security system.

All university hostels are secured and have time restrictions for guest to ensure safety and good condition of living. The Russian people are well-wishing and peaceful. Cities are secured by powerful police system observation. You will find that we share dry, cynical humor about people and events. There is no racism at all. Strangers will be extremely friendly with you and be impressed that you made the effort to visit their country over their more visited neighbors. Nowadays KSMA trains over 4,000 students and includes 6 faculties, over 50 educational departments and various subdivisions supervised by experienced and highly qualified professors and associate professors.

In addition to the clinical departments, located in the best hospitals of the city of Kirov , KSMA has:

At KSMA there are the following scientific schools: infectious diseases, neurology and neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, public health, rheumatology, surgery and many others.
