More than 50 years before the October Revolution Komissarov Technical College (KTC) was successfully training highly specialized technicians for the Russian industry including specialists for the auto industry. Its activities in this field gained high professional prestige and acknowledgement in Russia.
After the revolution in 1919 KTC was reorganized into the First Moscow Mechanical and Electrical Engineering school named after Lomonosov M.V. (Lomonosov school) comprising the following five departments: internal combustion engines, automobile, steam engineering, metal processing and electrical engineering of heavy currents.
It was Ivan Vasilyevitch Gribov who was appointed Chairman of Presidium of the Lomonosov School. Later on, after the recreation of the Moscow Auto-Mechanical Institute in 1939 he became the first dean of the auto and tractor department being at the same time the head of the “Automobile Maintenance” Chair.
However, the reorganization of the Komissarov College into the Lomonosov School was not successful enough to meet the demands of machine-building industry and prepare well-trained highly qualified specialists. Therefore, in 1920 the Lomonosov School was reorganized again and given the name of “The Lomonosov Practical Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institute”.
The Lomonosov Institute trained practicing engineers for vehicles manufacturing and maintenance specializing in automobile, internal combustion engines, machinery and electrical engineering.
On January 5, 1922 the decision was reached to reorganize the Lomonosov Moscow Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institute into a higher technical educational institution – the Moscow Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institute named after Lomonosov M.V.
In early 1932 the Lomonosov Moscow Auto and Tractor Institute moved to the premises of the Training Centre for Technical Education of the Stalin Moscow Automobile works. In the summer of 1932 the Moscow Auto-Mechanical Institute (MAMI) named after Lomonosov M.V. was set up on the basis of the Lomonosov Moscow Auto and Tractor Institute.
The automobile and tractor department (ATD) of MMMBI trained engineers specializing in the same disciplines which were taught at MAMI. The list of these disciplines was as follows: internal combustion engines, automobiles, tractors, machinery maintenance. Education at the department was provided by professors and readers of MAMI. The “Automobiles” Chair of this department trained engineers specializing in auto designing and auto maintenance. There were also “Tractors”, “Internal Combustion Engines” and other ones at that department.
In the 1950s thanks to the growing USSR international prestige and expanding scientific and cultural relations young people from abroad began arriving in this country to study in higher educational institutions. The first specialists for foreign countries graduated from MAMI in 1955. At that time international cooperation of MAMI was not limited by training specialists. Inventions of MAMI scientists were patented abroad, direct scientific links were established.
In 1988 Anatoly Leonidovich Karunin was elected Rector of MAMI. Thanks to his efficient management and proper decisions Moscow Automechanical Institute became Academy and in 1997 it was awarded the status of Technical University. A.L. Karunin, Professor and Doctor of Science, was awarded the title of Honoured Scientist of Russian Federation for great achievements in science and educational activities.
In March 2008 Andrey Vladimirovich Nickolaenko was elected Rector of the University at the labour collective body conference.
The order of the Ministry of education and science of Russia № 2898 from December 28, 2011 proclaimed that Moscow State Technical University MAMI and Moscow State University of Environmental Engineering are reorganized through merger of MSUEE to the MSTU «MAMI» as a structural division.
In April, 2012 joint University was named “Federal state budgetary educational institution of higher professional education “Moscow State University of Mechanical Engineering”.
At present more than 16,000 students are training at the University, the teaching staff is almost 1300 people. There are 58 departments and 6 institutes in the university (Automotive Institute, Technological Institute, Environmental and Chemical Engineering Institute, Institute of Economics and Management, Institute of Additional Education, International Institute, which provides training for foreign students), 7 faculties (Faculty "Automobile and Tractor Engineering", Faculty "Power Machine and Instrument Engineering", Faculty "Automation”, Faculty "Mechanical Engineering Technology", Faculty “Chemical process equipment”, Faculty “Ecology”, Faculty “Cybernetics and information technologies”), 4 representative organizations (in Dmitrov, Serpukhov, Ivanteevka, Tuchkovo). There are 7 comfortable dormitories. The University is provided with sufficiently modern technical basis for training students: there are 19 buildings with well-equipped lecture-halls, training and scientific laboratories, computer class-rooms, sports halls, a scientific-technical library which numbers nearly 1mln. books, dining halls and canteens.
University is the largest institution of higher education which prepares qualified specialists for various branches of engineering.
Moscow
Moscow is the capital, the most populous city, and the most populous federal subject of Russia. The city is a major political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation centre of Russia and the world, a global city. Moscow is the most populous city on the continent of Europe and the seventh largest city proper in the world, a megacity. The population of Moscow (as of 1 January 2010) is 10,562,099.
It is located by the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. Moscow sits on the junction of three geological platforms. Historically, it was the capital of the former Soviet Union, Russian Empire (for three years in 1728–30), the Tsardom of Russia, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. It is the site of the Moscow Kremlin, one of the World Heritage Sites in the city, which serves as the residence of the President of Russia. The Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) and the Government of Russia also sit in Moscow.
Moscow is a major economic centre. It is home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities. It possesses a complex transport system that includes four international airports, nine railroad terminals, and the world's second busiest (after Tokyo) metro system which is famous for its architecture and artwork. Its metro is the busiest single-operator subway in the world.
Education
Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and many countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students.
