One can hardly find a place in Russia with such an impressive number of implemented national projects as in the Krasnoyarsk Region. Our most focused “development points” have been determined in industry, power engineering and energy, research and education. Siberian Federal University, as a response to regional developmental challenges, was established in 2006 to train highly qualified specialists capable of working in any region of our country, including severe conditions of the Northern areas.

The University was founded by merging 5 major Krasnoyarsk institutions of higher education. Among the members of the University Board of Trustees there are representatives of large companies, politicians and scientists. The Chairman of the Board is Dmitry Medvedev, the Prime Minister of Russia.

The mission of Siberian Federal University is to serve the needs of the Region by providing high-quality practice-oriented higher education by means of close integration between education, business and research/innovation, enabling the graduates to successfully market themselves both locally and globally.

Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk is the largest industrial and cultural centre of Eastern Siberia, and capital of Krasnoyarsk Territory, the second largest region in Russia by area. It is situated in the centre of Russia at the confluence of the small river Kacha and mighty Yenisei. The town was founded in 1628 by Cossacks under troop leader Andrey Dubenskiy’s command and was originally named ”Krasniy Yar”.

The city is distinguished by its unique landscapes, mountain views, majestic Siberian forest and well-known Stolby Nature Reserve. This work of nature is a series of exotic rocky eminences situated in the taiga on the spurs of the Eastern Sayan Mountains. The territory of the reserve totals 47 000 hectares.

Today’s Krasnoyarsk is a modern industrial city with unique architecture, a capital of artistic and talented people of Siberia and one of the most beautiful cities in the country. As of January 1, 2009, more than 948 500 people live in Krasnoyarsk.

Several years in succession, Krasnoyarsk has been recognized as one of the most ‘comfortable’ cities in Russia. A number of various projects and programs, directed to the improvement of urban environment, are realized in Krasnoyarsk, among which are the following: “My courtyard”, ”Clean Entrance – Clean City” and two months of beautification and arrangement of green spaces “Clean City, Clean Siberia”.

Accommodation in hostels

Normally international students are accommodated at the University’s on-campus dormitory. International students are placed in dormitories only if they have application for accommodation in writing and if there are free rooms in the dormitory.

Accommodation issues are coordinated by the International Students Office. Generally there are joint showers and restrooms for several rooms. Food should be bought and cooked by yourself or you can also eat at the University’s café. Living at the University’s dormitory allows you to be more independent and to make more friends. However there are certain dormitory rules such as not coming too late, no noisy parties, no smoking, no alcohol or drugs and etc., you will have to follow. These rules are the same for all students’ dormitories.

Dormitory check-in starts on August.

You can also rent an apartment. In this case, you should inform the International Department staff about the address of the apartment and bring us a copy of the rental agreement. For your convenience below your will find some useful maps.

Research

The University provides unique opportunities for both research and education with a consistent amount of federal money invested in its hi-tech scientific facilities. A research centre for new and nano-materials is one of the major innovative SibFU facilities.

The University possesses:

• a supercomputer, one of “Top-50” most high-performance computers in Russia;
• a space data receiving centre and a centre of seismic prospecting;
• an observatory fully equipped with a weather station and a lunar-planetary camera;
• a complex of equipment for physical and chemical research;
• biotechnological, clinical and biological, nanotechnological and electronic laboratories

For the purpose of providing international recognition to the research conducted by faculty and staff, postgraduate and Ph.D students a project of publishing an own scientific journal has been launched. “SibFU journal” is a peer-reviewed journal consisting of five thematic series: “Humanities and Social Sciences”, “Mathematics and Physics”, “Biology”, “Chemistry”, “Engineering and Technologies”. The articles are published both in Russian and English.

Innovation, as one of the basics of the University, is represented at SibFU by over 40 small innovative enterprises in the fields of technologies, consulting and various services.

A number of publications by SibFU staff in international journals has risen 4 times since the foundation of the University, and the amount of awarded grants has turned 6-fold. The pure research profit of SibFU in 2014 was about 530 million RUR.
