The history of the RNRMU named after Pirogov began in 1906 when a medical faculty was opened as a part of Moscow Higher Women’s Courses.

Structurally the University includes 4 scientific research institutes, among which are the Institute of Gerontology included in 2008 according to the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation; 24 programme and self-supporting laboratories as parts of 6 scientific departments; 8 educational faculties and the Faculty of Advanced Training of Doctors with the total of 140 departments. 50 of these departments take part in the training of English speaking foreign students.

The University has its bases in 38 largest city hospitals, some dispensaries and maternity homes, among which is the Republican Children’s Clinical Hospital equipped with the modern medical facilities and a computer centre. In these hospitals the future doctors have their clinical practice under the supervision of experienced teachers. The teaching staff of the RSMU consists of 1500 professors and lecturers including 2 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 30 academicians of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 20 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 334 professors and 575 associate professors.

Now there are about 9000 undergraduate students, 583 postgraduate students, 798 residents, 400 interns, 89 external researchers. Among them there are 950 people from foreign countries.

Moscow

It is located by the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. Moscow sits on the junction of three geological platforms. Historically, it was the capital of the former Soviet Union, Russian Empire (for three years in 1728–30), the Tsardom of Russia, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. It is the site of the Moscow Kremlin, one of the World Heritage Sites in the city, which serves as the residence of the President of Russia. The Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) and the Government of Russia also sit in Moscow.

Moscow is a major economic centre. It is home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities. It possesses a complex transport system that includes four international airports, nine railroad terminals, and the world's second busiest (after Tokyo) metro system which is famous for its architecture and artwork. Its metro is the busiest single-operator subway in the world.


Education
Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and many countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students.

Hostel of box type, settling in rooms futnished for two or three persons.

Students’ leisure time can contribute to their health improvement. A modern sports complex of about 6 thousand sq. m. with three play gyms, a range of sports equipment halls and gyms for sports groups is at students RSMU employees’ service. Due to a great variety of sports groups everybody can choose one to his/her liking.

Safety

When student arrive to airport he/she will be met and transferred to university. At university student have orientation and welcome brief. After orientation student will be placed at university hostel.

During all time of studying at university foreign students are supported by qualified team of International Department. All their needs will be satisfied with pleasure. There is very helpful consultancy for students who have educational difficulties. University has own security system.

All university hostels are secured and have time restrictions for guest to ensure safety and good condition of living. The Russian people are well-wishing and peaceful. Cities are secured by powerful police system observation. You will find that we share dry, cynical humor about people and events. There is no racism at all. Strangers will be extremely friendly with you and be impressed that you made the effort to visit their country over their more visited neighbors. The RSMU has always taken the leading position in medicine. In 1997, after a long interval, the Students’ Scientific Society renewed its work, and the yearly Pirigov’s Conferences were reinitiated. In 2005 these conferences received the status of international conferences. Now, besides the participants from Russia and other countries of UIS, the RSMU welcomes guests from Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Poland, Albania, Romania and other countries.

The Diploma of the Russian State Medical University graduate is recognized in the whole world. Over 3000 specialists for more than 70 world states graduated from the faculty for foreign students. They work in their home countries and are thankful to the University. We intend to broaden this sphere in the university activities year.
