The history of the largest university in Crimea dates back to 1918 when the peninsula’s first institution of tertiary education, the Taurida University, was established. Among its notable founders were prominent Russian scientists Vladimir Vernadsky, Roman Gelwig, Nikolay Andrusov, Mikhail Bogoslovsky, Vladimir Obruchev, and Vladimir Palladin. Although the number one university in Crimea has born different names over the years, its essence has remained the same: high quality of education and research.

V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University is a higher education institution of rich, century-long history with a vast network of research and production facilities, which has more than 10,000 members of staff and over 35,000 students.

Today, Crimean Federal University encompasses 8 academies and institutes, 5 colleges and centres, 11 branches located across Crimea, and 7 research and science institutions.

It was the complicated, trouble stricken and eventful 20th century that saw the development of forward-looking educational institutions in the Republic of Crimea, which, in their relatively brief period of existence, managed to gain success and respect in scientific and academic circles, made an invaluable contribution to the development of global and national science, and produced a number of prominent scientists, writers, and public figures.

Today, the University carries on a variety of student, teaching, research, and training activities which enable its students to acquire and develop knowledge in various fields of science, art, and medicine.

V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University holds many international and national forums, conferences, events, meetings, and roundtables. The University has cooperation agreements with the leading national and foreign higher education institutions, regulatory bodies, major companies and enterprises of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Crimea. Being committed to promoting the development of research and science in the region, it initiates the establishment and development of various research and science institutions comprising students and faculty and staff representatives.

University’s production facilities, its active cooperation with the companies of related industries provide students with the chance to gain practical skills and open a number of employment opportunities.

Training is delivered in a variety of laboratories, including language laboratories, fully-equipped specialized classrooms and multimedia classrooms, at student farms and partner companies. Students have at their disposal a unique, well-equipped research library, rich both in training materials and research and fiction books.

Crimean Federal University offers a variety of options in terms of leisure activities such as joining performing arts societies, sports clubs, dance, song, and theatre groups.

The University maintains strong relations with its international partners in the framework of various research projects, students and faculty internship programmes.

Today, V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University trains future professionals using novel opportunities that meet high-level national and global standards in education. The number of these opportunities has increased significantly with the establishment of the new federal-level university through the merger of leading Crimean universities. V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University has developed into a major research and science centre and a source of pride for the Russian Federation and the Republic of Crimea.

Simferopol

First settlements on the territory of present day Simferopol were formed at pre-historic times, Napels-Scythian is the most famous among ancient ancestors of the city. It was the capital of late Scythian state formed in the 3rd century B.C. and presumably destroyed by Goths in the 3rd century A.D.

There was no large town on the territory of Simferopol in early medieval epoch. During Crimean khanate, a small town Akmesdzhit (known as Ak-Mechet in Russian sources) which was a residence of kalga - the second person in the state after khan. The quarters built at those times now are called the Old town. The Old town differs in its design with narrow and crooked streets - typical for oriental towns.

After Crimea was included into the Russian Empire, it was decided to form Tavricheskaya oblast (later – gubernia) on the most of the khanate territory and to found its center on the place of Ak-Mechet. In 1784, construction of administrative and apartment buildings and an Orthodox church began close to Kebir-Dzhami mosque. This district differs by its regular design (direct streets crossing each other at the right angle) and mainly 2-storeyed buildings.

The city including both newly built quarters and the territory of Ak-Mechet received the name Simferopol - it is translated from the Greek as “the town of benefit”. The Greek name was chosen due to the fact that at Catherine II time there was a fashion to give Greek names to new towns on the southern joined territories. It was a kind of memory of Greek colonies existing there at ancient and medieval times.

Since that time Simferopol is the administrative center of Crimea. Soviet power was established in Simferopol city in 1918. During the Russian Civil War 1918-1920, Simferopol was occupied by foreign troops. In 1945, after Autonomous republic was abolished and Simferopol became the center of Crimean oblast of Russia. The oblast was granted to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954.

After the declaration of Ukrainian independence in 1991, Simferopol became the capital of the movement (Sevastopol was another important center) for separating Crimea from Ukraine.

The historical and actual closeness of Crimea to Russia is the important reason for this movement: till 1954 Crimea administratively was a part of Russia, most part of Crimean population is Russian-speaking.
