The Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (the former Makiyivka Civil Engineering Institute) was founded on January 1, 1972. The history of the high school begins since 1947, when the specialty “Civil Engineering” on the base of the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute was created. For over 60 years the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DonNACEA) trains specialists for civil engineering and architecture. In Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine the DonNACEA is the only higher school which trains architects, specialists in Municipal Construction and City Economy, economists and managers for construction, road and aerodrome builders.
The Academy has trained more than 30000 civil engineers and 2500 architects, including more than 500 foreign citizens. The Academy has trained 30 doctors of sciences and 250 PhD; they work in many countries of the world. Today more than 8000 young people from Ukraine, the CIS countries, Africa, Asia, Middle East etc. are students of the Academy. The DonNACEA faculty comprises 432 lecturers, including 70 Dr. Sc., professors, 276 PhD, associate professors.
The Academy consists of the Institutes (departments):
- the Civil Engineering Institute;
- the Institute of Municipal Economy and Environment Protection;
- the Institute of Economics, Management, and Law in Construction;
- the Institute of Post-diploma Education and Professional Development;
- Architectural department,
- Mechanical department,
- department of Humanitarian Training.
Some substantial achievements of the DonNACEA faculty and students from the last year:
- giving the status “National” to the Academy (Decree of President of Ukraine No.470 of August 21, 2004);
the DonNACEA is a winner of the All-Ukrainian Competition of Products Quality (products, jobs, services) “100 BEST PRODUCTS OF UKRAINE – 2004” in the nomination “Educational Services in the Sphere of Construction and Architecture”;
- the first place in the Regional competition of the academies, universities, and institutes (2003/2004 academic year);
- considering the Academy many-sided activity as to the realization of the Bologna process principles, on February 1, 2005 the Academy became a member of the European Association of Civil Engineering Faculties (AECEF);
- the DonNACEA entering(2008) to the Association of Civil Engineering Higher Schools of CIS countries (ACB);
- proceeding along the path of the professional integration of the Academy students and graduates to the world and European Community, in April 2005 the Academy for the second time underwent the international accreditation in the JBM by the specialty “Industrial and Civil Engineering”, “Automobile Roads and Aerodromes”, “Industrial and Civil Architectures”, and “Municipal Construction and City Economy” for the educational and qualification levels “Master” (МEng) and “Bachelor” (BEng);
- besides the building specialties, at the beginning of 2007 the Institute of Economics, Management, and Law in Construction of the DonNACEA applied to the International Education Society Ltd. (Great Britain) for the purpose of certifying the educational process and receiving a certification level;
- introduction of the System of Quality Management in the sphere of higher education and scientific and technical achievements according to ISO 9001:2000 Certificate No. 07 100 045908 of September 12, 2007 issued by the Certification Body TÜV NORD CERT GmBH & Co.KG in the system of certification TÜV CERT).
In general the Academy works with enterprises and high schools of 18 countries in the frames of 56 signed agreements and protocols of intensions, such as:

The year 1869 is traditionally referred to as the date of founding Donetsk. In contrast to many other large cities which were born of the advantages provided by geography and transportation, Donetsk sprang up and developed from a mining and metallurgical industry thanks to rich stores of minerals. In the upper regions of Kalmius river, where the city is located, there were large deposits of coal, founded in 1779, the first coal mines appeared. Today mining and metallurgy are a thriving business and the plant is undergoing a period of rapid modernization changes.
Despite the reputation of many industrial cities (particularly those with iron and steel plants), it is surprising to learn that Donetsk is a relatively green and unpolluted city. In fact, it is considered one of Ukraine's most beautiful cities with one of the country's highest standards of living. This is evident in the city's diverse range of cultural attractions. It has three city theaters, a philharmonic hall, a circus, two planetariums, and literally dozens of museums. It is also home to annual international festivals including The Stars of the World's Ballet, The Festival of Young Pianists, The Festival of Smith Art, The Roses of Donetsk Festival and more others. It has beautiful parks, landscapes. Donetsk is the city of parks and gardens; it is also famous for its roses, which bloom from early summer till late autumn gladdening the eye of dwellers and guests of the city. It consists of 9 districts, linked with each other by tram, trolley and bus communications. Also it has developed air- and railway communications.
Nowadays the city is an important scientific and cultural center of Donetsk coal basin. There is also the Concert Hall, cinemas, Palaces of Culture and clubs, Picture Galleries and. Besides, there are architectural monuments of local importance, of sculpture and history, and memorial places. Thanks to its remarkable architecture the city has many places of interest: Artyoma street, Lenin Square, the Recreation parks etc. The inhabitants of Donetsk have places for rest after hard day. At their service there are Central Park of Culture and Rest, and branches of it - Lenin's Komsomol Park (by the Donbass Arena Stadium) and Sherbakov Park. In the outskirts of city there are Donetsk Botanical Gardens. A lot of greenery, beautiful buildings, the Kalmius and numerous lakes make the city wonderful in spring and in summer.
Donetsk Region Eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region has long been recognized for its natural and industrial resources. Rich in coal and other minerals, the region developed rapidly as a center for mining and steel production, as well as machine manufacturing. Donetsk is the most densely populated region of Ukraine: its population of 5.3 million resides within an area of 26,540 square kilometers. It borders to the east with Russia's Rostov region; in the south, the Sea of Azov, which flows into the Black Sea, provides the region with abundant shipping, fishing and tourism opportunities. The city of Donetsk, Ukraine's fourth largest city, has a population of nearly 1.2 million; its nickname is the City of Roses, referring to lush rose gardens that color many of its parks. Donetsk Region borders with Luhansk, Kharkiv, Dniprodzerzhynsk and Zaporizhia Regions of Ukraine and Rostov Region of Russian Federation. In the south, Donetsk Region is washed by the Azov Sea. Donetsk Region stretches 240 km from north to south, 170 km from west to east. The distance from Donetsk Region center to the capital of Ukraine by railway is 871 km, by roads, 693 km.
Donetsk Region includes 28 towns, 23 district centres, 134 urban villages and 1,124 villages. Donetsk region main cities and towns: Donetsk, Mariupol, Makeevka, Gorlovka, Kramatorsk, Slavyansk, Enakievo.
Territorially the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture is situated in the green area on the border of two cities – Donetsk and Makiyivka.

The Academy trains specialists by a multi-stage scheme:
Zero level – Preparatory courses (1 year of training);
First level – Bachelor (4 years of training);
Second level – Master (1.5-2 year of training);
Third level – Advanced training: post–graduate courses, fellowship for PhD (1–4 years of training).
On the territory of the Students’ Town there are five hostels which are considered for 1480 seats. The hostels have a block system of planning and two hostels have a hotel scheme of planning. Students live in one, two or three persons in a room in each hostel.
On the territory of the Students’ Town there is: dining-room, preventive sanatorium-clinic, first-aid post, barbershop. There is laundry which serves the Students’ Town. A dining-room has a large assortment of the first and second foods, bread, juices, and drinks. At will of students it is possible to place in dormitories subject to conditions room and board with a receipt three valid for one occasion feed. The preventive sanatorium-clinic of DonNACEA can place 100 students. In a preventive clinic, students of the academy make healthy and treatment. In a summer period a preventive sanatorium-clinic drives out in sporting health-improvement camp on a sea-side of Azov and continues working on making healthy students.
In the hostels there is a computer for a common use and a mini-gym. On the territory of the Academy there are 5 gyms in which students can go in for 17 kinds of sport.
Students living in the hostels can use a high-speed Internet day and night in any room of the campus. There is a library which is open in the evening time.
When student arrive to airport he/she will be meted and transferred to university. At university student have orientation and welcome brief. After orientation student will be placed at university hostel. During all time of studying at university foreign students are supported by qualified team of International Department. All their needs will be satisfied with pleasure. There is very helpful consultancy for students who have educational difficulties.
All university hostels are secured and have time restrictions for guest to ensure safety and good condition of living.
The Ukrainian people are philosophical and peaceful. The most recent example being the Orange revolution, a completely peaceful demonstration by the people looking for political change. You will find that Ukrainians are very amicable and have good sense of humor. There is no racism at all. Strangers will be extremely friendly with you and be impressed that you made the effort to visit their country over their more visited neighbors.
The DonNACEA is the only higher school in Ukraine which has got the international accreditation of the building specialties. The accreditation in the JBM (The Joint Board of Moderators, Great Britain) let the DonNACEA students have a personal membership in the Institution of Civil Engineers – ICE (Student Membership), receive the ICE certificates, use the Institute information resources which comprise the whole world experience in the building sphere free of charge, and master their profession in future. According to Washington Convention graduates’ diploma by these specialties are recognized in 150 countries of the world. More than 50 students yearly apply for the individual membership in the ICE.
The DonNACEA participation in the international project CERTIFICATE held by the International Education Society Ltd. (IES, Great Britain) let the graduates of the training programs “Economics of Enterprises” and “Management” also obtain, in addition to their diploma, the International Certificate of the IES.
.Having got the ICE and IES certificates which confirm the DonNACEA diploma correspondence to the level of a European university graduate the Academy has proved a high quality of training students in Ukraine and got a right to organize a further training of specialists of the world level.
