The University started as Stalingrad Medical Institute founded in 1935. In 1993 it got the status of the Academy, and in 2003 it was granted the status of the University. The University is currently headed by the prominent Russian scientist, Academician of the Russian Academy for Medical Sciences, Professor Vladimir I. Petrov. The Volgograd State Medical University is one of the most famous and highly reputable Higher Schools both in Russia and abroad. It is proud of its highly-qualified teaching staff, advanced researchers and experienced physicians whose names are world-famous.

Choosing this University means plentiful opportunities for gaining professional expertise and career pursuit. The University is accredited by the Russian Ministry for Education for the teaching of both Russian and overseas students. The University is also listed in the Directory of Higher Medical Schools recognized by the World Health Organization. It means that our graduates can get a job at any country after passing national examinations if necessary. Nowadays the University ranks very high among the medical schools of the Russian Federation. Many scientists of the University are world-famous owing to their great contribution to the theory and practice of medicine. The University has been training international students since 1962. Students from 113 states of the former Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa have studied at our University. Over this period 3000 physicians, dentists and paediatricians and pharmacists have been trained for foreign countries. Since 2000 the Volgograd State Medical University has got an opportunity to teach foreign students in the English language. About 70 overseas doctors are engaged in postgraduate study at the University every year.

The Volgograd State Medical University is an active participant of a number of international projects promoting medical research and clinical practice. This accounts for a genuine interest in the activities of the University on the part of government officials of various countries. It has recently been visited by the ambassadors of the USA, Malaysia, India, the People’s Republic of China, Brunei, Bangladesh, etc., top officials of Medical and Dental Councils of different countries.

The Volgograd State Medical University was one of the first to start providing educational services to international students and has accumulated immense experience in training medical students. At present training is provided in two forms – in Russian and English Medium. The English-Medium Courses are delivered by professors having teaching experience in foreign universities or actively participating in exchange programs. Training provided at the University meets the highest international standards. All the courses operate in a hard-working and creative atmosphere and combine intensive training in the theory of medicine with practical activities.

The University has been training international students since 1962. Students from 113 states of the former Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa have studied at our University. Over this period 3000 physicians, dentists and pediatricians and pharmacists have been trained for foreign countries.

Our graduates work in many countries: the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, India, Arab, African and Latin American countries, etc.






Volgograd city (former Tsaritsyn and Stalingrad) is the capital and administrative center of Volgograd oblast of Russia. Volgograd city is located in the southeastern part of European Russia on Volga River. Volgograd has the status of “Hero City” of Russia because of Battle of Stalingrad happened here during World War II.

Volgograd has the population of 984,000 (2008) on the territory of 565 sq. km. Under the Köppen climate classification Volgograd has a humid continental climate.

Volgograd plays an important role as industrial center of modern Russia. Main industries of the city are aluminum, steel and chemical production, oil refining, shipbuilding, machinery and vehicles manufacturing. Also it should be mentioned that Volgograd Hydroelectric Plant is situated near the northern part of Volgograd city.

Volgograd is a large transport junction connecting city with Caucasus, Donbas oblast of Ukraine, Moscow city and Siberia regions of Russia. Volgograd is located at Volga-Don Canal eastern end. The longest European route (E40) (from Calais of France to Ridder of Kazakhstan) goes through Volgograd city of Russia.

The city has a well developed transportation network: buses, trolleybuses, trams, minibuses and taxi, and also Russia's only underground tram system. In Volgograd, there is an airport and railway station, and Europe's largest river port. Two federal highways also pass through the city.

Volgograd is the site of the most important battle of the World War Two. Certainly, the two main monuments of the city are related to the war: the giant “Motherland” sculpture and the panoramic museum dedicated to the famous Battle of Stalingrad. There are other monuments in the city as well, including the Kazan Cathedral, the “Old Sarepta”.

Now Volgograd is the administrative centre of the Volgograd region. This is one of the most important industrial, economic, cultural and historical centers in Russia. Volgograd is a major tourist center. It is a monument-city and a hero-city, visited by hundreds of thousands of Russian and foreign tourists. They are attracted by Volgagrad’s nature, mineral springs, spa and health resorts, along with the rich and glorious history.

There are 3 comfortable hostels including apartments with all modern conveniences for students’ study and rest. All the hostels are situated within easy reach from both University buildings and clinics.

A special accommodation service which provides our students with flats to rent is run by members of the administrative staff. Our officials have built up expertise in placing students in accommodation that suits them.

VolGMU provides block type hostel s. In each block there are 2 living rooms (for 2 and 3 persons) and a bathroom consisting of a shower, toilet, wash-room. On each residential floor there are recreation rooms, rooms for self-study, kitchen, garbage disposal and rooms for storage of fire equipment. For the temporary accommodation for the parents who came to visit, University provides comfortable living rooms equipped with refrigerator, television.


University students have plentiful opportunities for conducting research, participating in scientific conferences, publishing the results of their research in Russia and abroad.

Preclinical courses are delivered in 4 main buildings of the University which are located in the centre of the city. Clinical courses are provided in 15 multiprofile clinics with departments of surgery, cardiology, traumatology, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment facilities. The Regional Cardiology Centre housing the University department of Cardiology is one of the best cardiological clinics in Russia.

Postgraduate training is provided by different colleges of the University; it is available in the following areas: Allergology and Immunology, Cardiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Endocrinology, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Infectious Diseases, Maxillofacial Surgery, Neurology, Oncology, Surgical Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Orthodontics, Otolaryngology, Pathological Anatomy, Paediatrics, Phthisiology, Preventive Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Radiotherapy, Dermatology, ST Diseases, Social Hygiene and Public Health, Sports Medicine and Occupational Medicine, Pedodontics, Surgery of Children, Surgery, Therapy (Internal Medicine), Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Urology.

Our students enjoy excellent study facilities to support their learning:

  • a well-stocked library which comprises over 700 000 books in Russian, English, French, German, Arabian and other languages. There are also dictionaries in different languages;
  • an Internet centre within the library.

The University puts much emphasis on physical culture development and enhancing popularity of sports among students. Several gyms and sports grounds are available for University students. The University rents a swimming pool and a big stadium. Besides, it has a sports camp on a picturesque bank of the Volga where the students can rest and go in for sports at weekends and on summer holidays.

The University encourages students to celebrate their national festivals. Spectacular performances with folk songs and dances which are part of such celebration are admired by both students and academic staff.

The University staff is very respectful to religious traditions of our students. In the city there are a few Orthodox Churches, a Catholic Church, a Protestant Church, several Mosques and a Synagogue. That means that our international students have the opportunity to follow their own traditions and observe religious holidays.
