Gomel State Medical University was founded in 1990 and currently holds a leading position among the top medical schools in the Republic of Belarus. Today, the three faculties - medical, medical-diagnostic and faculty to train specialists for foreign countries (FPSZS) - enrolls more than 3,500 students.


Department to train specialists for foreign countries, was founded in 2000 and is preparing for general practitioners therapeutic profile. The high level of teaching in the university provides students with the acquisition of deep knowledge and skills, both theoretical and practical. Graduates receive an international diploma, qualification and title of Doctor Doctor of Medicine.


During the existence of the faculty has trained more than 314 professionals. Today, our graduates are successfully operating therapists, pediatricians, surgeons, obstetricians, anesthesiologists in health care around the world, 13 graduates of master`s thesis.


At the department to train specialists for foreign countries, foreign nationals are accepted regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or religion. In the learning process into account regional peculiarities of climate and ethnic factors in countries of residence of students.


Currently, the faculty is trained 450 students from 23 countries (India, Syria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Lebanon, United States, Peru, Ghana, Nigeria, etc.)





Gomel

 

The Gomel region is one of the 6 administrative regions (or oblasts) which make up Belarus. Gomel is located in the south-eastern corner of the country. The Gomel region of Belarus borders Russia in the east and the Ukraine in the south. Around a third of the region is agricultural land.

Gomel is the main city in the region, which is divided into 4 districts. The Gomel region is divided into 21 districts and there are 18 cities, 17 towns and 2470 villages.




Transport links in the Gomel region

The Gomel region has a good road infrastructure with major international motorways between Russia, Europe and the Ukraine running through the region.

The Gomel region has an extensive rail network, with 90% of the country’s rail freight and 50% of passenger traffic running through the region.

The River Dnieper and its tributaries run from north to south and spans 420 km. Inflows of the Dnieper and Pripyat rivers are used for both passenger and shipping and are of great value to the region. The Gomel region also boasts numerous lakes and extensive canal systems.

There are airports at Gomel and Mozyr.




Industry in the Gomel region

The Gomel region is one of the most advanced industrial regions in Belarus. There are about 300 medium and large enterprises, which between them account for 24.1% of the total industrial output of the Republic of Belarus. Approximately 70% of all production is exported, and Gomel enjoys trading links with more than 100 countries.

  • machine building, especially agricultural machinery
  • steel and rolled metal production

The main industrial area centers around Gomel, Mozyr, Zhlobin, Svetlogorsk, Rechitsa and Dobrush.

There are the Gomel-Raton free economic zone and Gomel science and technology park. 




Natural resources in the Gomel region

The Gomel region produces a range of natural resources and minerals, including:

  • oil (60 oilfields)
  • potash and rocksalt
  • brown coal
  • peat
  • building stone
  • sand
  • chalk

The region is home to the Pripyatsky National Park, an area of pristine nature and breathtaking landscapes of the Belarusian Polesye. The park is the only place in the world where you will find primeval floodplain oak forests.


Agriculture in the Gomel region

The region is self-sufficient agriculturally, and also provides the food-processing sector with raw materials.

The region has a significant cattle-breeding industry, serving meat and dairy markets, as well as significant arable farming centres for potatoes, vegetables and flax (in the eastern part of the region). Land given over to agriculture accounts for some 1.4 million hectares.

Approximately 50% of production is exported to various countries across the world.


Culture and media in the Gomel region


There are a number of archeological, historical, cultural and architectural monuments, as well as 30 museums, 6 theatres and 2 art galleries in the Gomel region.

Gomel Palace & Park Ensemble is one of the oldest and famous museums. The Rumyantsev-Paskevich Residence is the main historical and cultural site of Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble. The ensemble is an architectural monument of the late18th― early19th century.

There are various festivals of arts – regional, republican and international levels in the region.

In 2011 Gomel became the Belarus and CIS Capital of Culture. These statuses underline the high level of Gomel achivements in cultural sphere.

The Gomel region has 70 state newspapers and magazines, together with long-established regional television and radio stations.

Cultural and sporting life of the faculty to train specialists for foreign multinational in nature. Students are given the opportunity to engage in various sports at the sports club, gym or on the sports playing fields of the university. Regularly various sporting events are organized (Sportlandiya, championships in football, table tennis, cricket, etc.)


Celebration of important dates in the life of the faculty to train specialists for foreign countries has become a real tradition. One of these dates is the Days of School, in which students can develop their creative abilities and talents. Guests of the festival, among which often present employees of embassies of different countries, always look forward to this colorful, fun and a good holiday.




Taking into account the multicultural flavor of foreign nationals who are studying at the university, the administration is doing everything possible to preserve and maintain national traditions. Therefore, in the framework of the Days of the Faculty of the festival of ethnic cuisine, where everyone can learn about the features of Indian, Syrian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani and Yemeni cuisine. One of the most exciting and highly anticipated events, as well as an outstanding event in the life of the faculty is a competition, "Mr. faculty", the results of which is determined by the most talented students of the faculty.

Faculty of General Medicine for international Students was established in 2000 and now rates second at the Gomel State Medical University as per number of its students. The Faculty trains general practitioners, its graduates are conferred the profession of a Physician and the degree of a Doctor of Medicine. High level of teaching at the University guarantees its students the acquisition of deep knowledge – both theoretical and practical.





International students are admitted to the University irrespective of their racial and national characteristics, sex and religion. The regional peculiarities of both the climatic and ethnical factors of students` homelands are taken into consideration during the process of education.


At present, about 400 students from 18 countries of the world  study medicine at the Faculty.
